The “Rowing Stronger” Book (2019)

“Rowing Stronger: Strength Training to Maximize Rowing Performance, Second Edition” is my step-by-step guide to strength training for rowing performance. The 2019 Second Edition includes expanded content for strength training for longer races (>2km), lightweights, coxswains, masters, and juniors, guest chapters by fellow rowing strength coaches Blake Gourley (Movement Assessments for Rowing) and Joe DeLeo (Kettlebell Training for Rowing), and sample programs. I wrote a “Five-Year Update” in 2024, included in the ebook download and also available separately.

2024 “Five-Year Update”

I wrote an addendum in 2024 based on my coaching in the five years since writing the 2019 Second Edition. This is included in the ebook download already or you can download just the update here. I address major topics of: coaching the lowering and lifting tempo, plyometric exercises, velocity-based strength training, hamstring knee flexion exercises, lateral and rotational hip exercises, and core exercises with synchronized breathing, plus six additional sample training programs.

The “NSCA Coach” 3-Part Series (2019-2020)

Fellow rowing strength coach Blake Gourley and I co-authored a three-part article series for the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s NSCA Coach online magazine in 2019-2020. Part 1 addresses injuries and strength training strategies to reduce them; Part 2 addresses strength training for performance; Part 3 addresses energy system development (conditioning) and how rowers, rowing coaches, and strength coaches can better align for comprehensive support.
